This is what happens when we sleep well

  • When we sleep, we save energy, with our energy levels being at their lowest. This reduces the pressure on the body’s organs and allows them to recover, ready for the next day.
  • Damaged tissue is repaired when we sleep. During the day, we suffer minor injuries to muscle tissue, skin and other organs. Without the maintenance routine that sleep provides, the body would have broken down when all these small injuries had accumulated. In addition, our brains exercise our muscles and nervous system when we sleep.
  • The immune system is completely dependent on good sleep. Without enough sleep, it is weakened and you may find that you get infections and other diseases more easily.
  • Sleep sorts our memories. A good analogy is that the brain moves our memories from the “inbox” to the archive, assessing which ones are important. They are organized and sorted in the archive, and memories can actually change over time as they are processed several times during their lifetime.
The psyche also gets a good overhaul when we sleep, so that we feel better when we wake up after a good night’s sleep – and worse when we don't get enough sleep: When we sleep too little, we are quick to feel low and irritable. So prioritizing sleep, even in a busy everyday life, can help you with more than you might think.
